You consistently meet and exceed expectations at work and your contributions are valuable to your department and company. So, you’re vying for a long-awaited promotion that’s opening up. And you think you have it made, because after all, your record will speak for itself as your boss decides who gets the job, right?

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Rather than resting on your laurels and assuming the promotion is yours, avoid getting burned by taking some proactive steps:

Show your leadership potential.

If you want to move up and be a leader, act like one. This doesn’t mean adopting an attitude of superiority; in fact, quite the opposite. True leaders serve, inspire, and lift others. Here are a few more tips:

  • Steer clear of workplace drama and politics.
  • Be respectful, honest, trustworthy and confident in all situations – even if you have to step back, take a breath, and reassess before you move forward.
  • Serve as a role model for others. Demonstrate that you can thoughtfully and successfully guide your teammates.

Moreover, think like a leader. And don’t be surprised if coworkers start to come to you for advice. This means they view you the same way. And as your manager sees this happening, they’ll be more likely to officially move you into a higher position.

Make your boss’s job easier.

Reinforce that you’re not only a team player, but that you also understand what the greatest concerns are as they apply to your team or work unit – especially those that likely keep your manager awake at night. Then, do whatever you can to relieve your boss of those pain points. This shows your investment in the bigger picture of what constitutes success. Plus, any smart supervisor will invest more in direct reports who help them out.

Ask how you can improve.

Go to your manager for feedback on your performance and, if you’re not sure how you could get better, ask. As you do so, be prepared to receive constructive criticism without getting angry or defensive. Be an active listener and stay professional: this, too, shows you’re ready for the next level.

Bring in revenue.

The bottom line is the bottom line: Every organization cares about building profit. You’ll be seen as a more valuable employee if you can show how you bring in revenue and/or save money. Have some specific examples to present – with numbers and details to support your case. This will help justify your promotion and the accompanying pay raise.
