If you’re like millions of Americans, you’ve been working from home since the COVID-19 pandemic changed life as we know it. You’re grateful to have the ability to continue working from your home’s comforts safely, but doing so isn’t always easy, especially if you have children.

Chances are, your kids are home with you 24/7, which makes having a productive workday feel impossible. Here’s some advice to help you do it all.

3 Tips to Balance Work and Family When Working Remotely

Find a Quiet Space to Work

If you don’t already have a home office, it’s time to create one. You might need to get a little creative — i.e., finding space in a walk-in closet or the corner of your bedroom — but it doesn’t matter where you’re working, as long as it’s a place where you can concentrate. It’s important to be able to shut the door and step away from the distractions in your home to work to your full potential.

Schedule Your Day

Working while watching younger kids can be nearly impossible. If you live with a partner who works, try to stagger your schedules so that one can watch the kids while the other works. When this isn’t possible, ask your boss if you can hold non-traditional hours at least part of the day — i.e. before the kids get up or after they go to bed — so you can give work your full attention.

Make Time for Yourself

Traditionally, you’ve had a commute to help you transition from parent mode to working professional and back. Since your commute is currently just a short walk to your home workspace, it can be hard to instantly turn these different parts of your personality on and off.

When possible, take a few minutes to help ease into the different parts of your day. For example, enjoy your morning coffee while browsing the news or end your workday with a 10-minute yoga session. This will help you shift your mind so that you can be more focused on the present.
