If your company isn’t particularly diverse, it’s time to make some major changes. Now that 2020 has arrived, there’s no excuse for having a work environment where all employees do not feel accepted and appreciated.

Of course, knowing how to transform your current workplace into a more inclusive space isn’t always easy. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Embed It in Your Company Culture

Every employee should feel included in your company culture. If the values and behaviors currently held by your organization don’t represent diversity, you can change this. Start by encouraging people to be themselves, instituting a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, and creating a work environment where everyone has a voice.

Welcome Diverse Viewpoints

Your employees aren’t going to agree on everything all the time, and that’s okay. What’s important is that people respect one another’s opinions — no matter how much they might disagree. From ideas for new products to feedback on existing projects, employees should be able to share their thoughts — in a respectful manner — without judgment.

Take a Closer Look at Minority Groups

When you conduct employee satisfaction surveys, you might find your staff as a whole is satisfied with your current work environment. However, this might not represent the views of certain minority groups. Segmenting results into categories — i.e., gender, ethnicity, geography — will help you make sure no voices get lost in the crowd.

Create an Inclusive Work Environment

Your office space serves the basic needs of the group as a whole, but that doesn’t mean everyone is comfortable. Ask employees what you could do to make their time at the office more welcoming. For example, creating a nursing room for mothers will make a world of difference to women who need it.

Conduct Focus Groups

Dig deeper into employee needs by conducting regular focus groups. Help people feel more at ease speaking their minds by hiring an outside facilitator. Use this opportunity to gain valuable insights on key diversity issues at your company — i.e., accommodation of beliefs, gender equality, generation gaps.
