Having These Skills Will Help You Compete in Today’s Workplace

Trust is the key to workplace success. If you and your colleagues can’t rely on one another, you won’t accomplish anything. Of course, building trust is much easier said than done, so you have to work at it.

Follow these tips to build a trusting relationship with your co-workers, so you can move forward together as a team.

Keep Your Word

When you tell a colleague you’re going to do something, follow through with it. This is a relatively simple process, but some people still have trouble with it. You wouldn’t trust someone who routinely says one thing and does another, so don’t be that person. Things don’t always go according to plan, and that’s ok, but when you need to change course, give your co-workers a heads up.

Communicate

Open and honest communication is crucial to building trusting relationships with your peers, and anyone. When you’re not on the same page with your colleagues, wires can easily become crossed. Even when you don’t think it’s necessary, make a habit of talking through projects — i.e., progress, problems along the way, expected deadlines, etc. — so everyone knows exactly what’s going on.

Bond Outside the Office

Surface relationships are built at the workplace, but to really scratch the surface, you need to spend time with your colleagues outside your place of business. Ask your co-workers out to lunch, happy hour or even to your home for a weekend barbecue. This will allow you to get to know each other on a personal level, which will build trust.

Be Patient

Trust isn’t a sentiment that’s immediately felt. It takes time to get to know a person and gradually learn to trust them, so be patient. You and your co-workers will not immediately trust one another — and you shouldn’t. After spending time with these people, you’ll learn who you can trust and who you can’t. If you try to rush it, you might end up trusting someone you shouldn’t, so take it step by step.
