Millennials have been the largest generation in the U.S. workforce since 2015, according to the Pew Research Center, so you probably have several of these young professionals on your staff. By now, you’ve certainly noticed that managing them is very different from their baby boomer and Gen-X counterparts.

They’ve gotten a bit of a bad rap, but millennials really are outstanding workers with a desire to make a mark on your company. This demographic is also the future of the workforce, so you need to learn how to relate to them. Find out how to keep millennial talent happy and engaged, so they don’t move on to your competition.

Provide Daily Feedback

One of the biggest differences between millennials and more-seasoned workers is their desire for feedback. Previously dreaded, these young employees are eager to know what they’re doing well and where there’s room for improvement. Contrary to long-time habits, feedback doesn’t have to be given exclusively in formal reviews.

Satisfy your millennials by offering minor critiques of their performance on a daily basis. A little praise for a job well done or a few tips for improvement on a project will make them feel noticed.

Create New Challenges and Opportunities

Older generations accepted assignments from the boss without hesitation, but millennials don’t care to be sidled with busywork. This generation is out to make a difference, so keep them happy by doling out challenging work that can open the door to new opportunities. If you keep them stimulated, they’ll keep coming back for more.

Let Their Voice Be Heard

Millennials grew up in households with parents who listened to their thoughts and opinions, so they expect the same from their employer. This generation won’t stand for being talked down to or brushed off because of their age. As reasonable people, they don’t expect you to implement all of their suggestions, but show them the respect they deserve by giving them a voice.

Offer Flexible Work Arrangements

As the first generation to grow up with technology at their fingertips, millennials are a major proponent of a flexible work environment. The extent of the flexibility you can provide varies majorly by job, but do what you can. From the ability to work remotely — sometimes — to letting people set — at least some of — their own schedule, this age group really values the ability to strike a solid work-life balance.

Encourage Collaboration

Group work hasn’t always been highly coveted in the workplace, but millennials are social creatures. Unlike previous generations, these professionals thrive in a collaborative work environment, so encourage it. This is great for team bonding, and can bring much better results than would’ve been achieved if everyone worked on a solo basis.
