Getting a bad performance review doesn’t feel great. In fact, it feels pretty lousy. When your boss isn’t pleased with your attitude, work ethic or the quality of your output, you might be tempted to submit your resignation, but you’re not a quitter.

In time, you might realize the poor performance review was the reality check you needed. Use these tips to turn your negative evaluation into something positive and get back on track.

Absorb the Feedback

Hearing less-than-flattering comments about yourself isn’t fun, but if you want to improve, you have to internalize them. Performance reviews are given to help you improve, not make you feel bad about yourself, so try not to take the feedback personally. Take a step back and try to see your behavior from your boss’s perspective. This will help you learn and grow into an even better version of yourself.

Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

If you’re serious about improving, set goals that promote changes for the better. Create a set of S.M.A.R.T. — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound — objectives that address the problems highlighted by your manager. Vague goals often go by the wayside, but the S.M.A.R.T. approach makes it much easier to focus, because you know exactly what you’re striving for and have a deadline for when objectives need to be completed.

Create a Development Plan

Your S.M.A.R.T. goals will serve as the basis for your development plan, but take it a step further by asking your boss for help. Work together to make a comprehensive plan that will produce the kind of changes needed to make your next performance review a good one. This will show your manager you’re serious about improving and get the two of you on the same page.

Be Patient

Change doesn’t happen overnight. Don’t expect to be honored as employee of the month after a few good days on the job. Your boss wants to see consistent performance over time, so put your head down and get to work. If you stick with it, you will prove you’ve changed your habits for the better.
