You wouldn’t think about applying for a job without conducting an online search to learn more about the company, but what you may not realize is potential employers are doing the same to you. It may happen before deciding to invite you for an interview or after, but you can be certain the interviewer will check out all of your social media profiles.

Since you know it’s going to happen, take some time to clean up your social presence now so a poorly thought Facebook post doesn’t cost you a job. Follow these three guidelines to give your profiles a squeaky clean overhaul.

  1. Delete Questionable Content

Expect hiring managers to dig deep into your social media history, so everything you wouldn’t want your future boss to see needs to be removed. If you’ve been a frequent social media user for years, this may take some time, but it’s well spent. Get rid of anything even remotely controversial, especially posts of a religious or political nature. It should go without saying that anything illegal or depicting you as irresponsible also needs to be removed, along with content containing spelling or grammatical errors. If someone else posted unsavory pictures of you, untag yourself and politely request they be taken down.

  1. Think Twice Before Posting

Now that your profile is sparkling, be extra careful with the content you post. You want to paint yourself as a responsible, likeable professional, so keep your posts positive and upbeat. Avoid posting rants, derogatory comments and any of the questionable content mentioned above at all costs — this includes sharing posts written by others. Go the extra mile to impress interviewers by periodically posting content relative to your line of work.

  1. Enable Privacy Settings

Social media is a great way to connect with family and friends, so if you want to share content of a personal nature — vacation photos, funny stories about your kids and your Saturday night plans — decide which platform will be purely personal and put it on lockdown. Enable strict privacy settings so only your friends can see the content you share. Make sure the public elements of your page — such as your profile and cover photos — are appropriate for the eyes of an interviewer.
