There’s no better time for a fresh start than a brand new year. It’s already November, so that means it’s time to start preparing for 2017. The year ahead can be the busiest, most profitable 12-month period your warehouse has even experienced, if you create a strong game plan and push your team to success.

Follow these three tips to start preparing for the new year now, so you’ll be ready to hit the ground running on January 1.

Conduct Annual Reviews

If you’re not already performing annual reviews, it’s time to make this a yearly tradition. Try to get this done by the end of the year, if possible, or at least by the end of January. Take each employee aside to discuss their performance this past year, areas for improvement and goals for the future. Align your findings to hiring goals, so you can fill the gaps this year.

Implement Annual Safety Training

Keeping your workers safe should always be your top priority, but many of these people may not be properly trained to handle the risks associated with working in a warehouse. Get everyone on the same page by instituting a mandatory annual safety program at the beginning of the year to set standards. Start the year off with the satisfaction of knowing your entire staff is equipped with the proper safety knowledge.

Hire More Temporary Employees

Get 2017 off to a strong start by increasing the number of temporary employees on your team. Having additional hands on deck will cause productivity to soar, effectively motivating everyone to push themselves to keep the momentum up. If you’re thinking about expanding your staff on a permanent basis, use this as a trial run to see if it makes sense and consider extending long-term job offers to your most outstanding temps.
