Working as a forklift operator is a great way to earn a solid living. Whether you’re just getting started in the field or searching for a new beginning, you need a perfectly polished resume to catch the attention of potential employers.

Kentucky has the highest concentration of industrial truck and tractor operators — including forklift operators — of any state in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Use these three tips to write a forklift operator resume sure to lead to an interview request.

3 Main Points to Highlight on Your Forklift Operator Resume

  1. Certification

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires all forklift operators to be certified to use this heavy equipment. In addition to a heightened risk of injury, non-compliance comes with very steep fines, so any employer worth your time will not allow you to work as a forklift operator unless you’re certified. If you already have this certification, you’re at an advantage, so be sure to include this on your resume. List the name of the course, the institution attended and the date of completion.

  1. Education

Most companies require forklift operators to have a high school diploma or equivalent, so showcase your education. List the name of your high school — or GED program — and the dates you attended, so the reader can easily see your educational background meets the needs for the job.

  1. Safety Training

Anyone who operates heavy machinery is expected to adhere to strict safety protocols. If you’ve received any formal safety training, be sure to include this on your resume, because it will give you an edge on your competition. Not only does it tell the employer you value safety, it also shows you know how to take the proper steps to keep yourself and everyone around you safe.
