Working in the light industrial/manufacturing sector is very rewarding, but can it also come with a number of risks. It’s important to make sure you’re equipped with all the right on-the-job protections, to always enjoy a safe and healthy day at work. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires your employer to provide certain personal protection equipment — or PPE — when you’re exposed to certain hazards, so know your rights.

Personal Protective Equipment Keeps You Safe at Work

When you go to work each day, you’re not sitting behind a desk staring at a computer, you’re working with your hands. From exposure to highly volatile chemicals, to electrical hazards, you need to take extra precautions to avoid potentially serious injuries or even death. Personal protective equipment mandated by OSHA varies by job, but may consist of hard hats, gloves, respirators, safety glasses, earplugs, special shoes or vests – designed to combat a specific danger.

Sometimes the need to wear personal protective equipment is obvious, while other times its purpose may seem a bit unclear to the uninformed eye. Your employer is responsible for making sure you understand its purpose, know how to use it, and have equipment that fits correctly. OSHA requires all personal protective equipment to be well-constructed and properly maintained – because if it isn’t, your safety is at risk.

Under OSHA guidelines, your employer must provide training explaining when to use your personal protective equipment, what items are needed to keep you safe, how it should be worn, any limitations it has and how to take care of, maintain, and dispose of it. Nothing is more important than your safety, so never accept an assignment until you have the correct personal protective equipment and you’ve been thoroughly educated on how to use it.
