Anything but a formality, a job interview is your chance to weed top warehouse talent out from the rest. Of course, it’s hard to accomplish this unless you ask the right interview questions.

It’s always best to ask questions that require an open-ended response, because those answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ don’t provide enough information. Add the questions below to your interview list, as they’ll help you decide if the candidate has both the skills and personality needed to succeed as part of your team.

4 Interview Questions for Warehouse Workers

  1. Why do you want to work at our warehouse?

Your warehouse is a great place to work, so you need team members who truly want to be there. Look for responses that mention specific things the candidate enjoys about the job — i.e., working with their hands, being part of a team, problem solving, or playing a part in customer satisfaction. Anyone who doesn’t appear enthusiastic about the position or clearly states they’re just trying to earn a living doesn’t belong on your team.

  1. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work. How did you handle the situation?

Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s how they’re handled that counts. You want to hire someone who will admit when they’re wrong, own the mistake and learn from it. If the candidate pretends they’ve never had a slipup or tries to place the blame on someone else, move on to the next.

  1. Describe a time you had a conflict with a co-worker. How did you resolve it?

Even top talent clashes with their peers sometimes, and that’s ok. What you want to focus on in their response is how the discrepancy was resolved. Choose a candidate who is level-headed  enough to realize their point of view isn’t the only one that matters, and settles conflicts by trying to see things from the other person’s prospective and meet in the middle.

  1. Explain how you create a safe work environment for yourself and others.

As you’re very aware, safety is the top priority of every well-run warehouse. You can’t maintain a safe workspace without 100% commitment from your team, so your new hire must be devoted to the cause. Seek a candidate who values training, understands the importance of following the rules and doesn’t cut corners.
