After you’ve been on the job a while, it’s only natural to fall into a comfort zone. Knowing how to complete all the responsibilities associated with the position and feeling at ease with your colleagues is truly remarkable, but make sure your attitude doesn’t become too relaxed.

Gradually becoming too secure in your job can cause the quality of your work to decline. If any of these behaviors sound familiar, it’s time to put a little more effort into your job.

Missing Deadlines

When you first landed the position, you regularly turned assignments in early, but you’ve grown to view deadlines as a suggestion instead of a requirement. Even if you’re not getting in trouble for submitting work late, the shift in your behavior probably hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Even if no one else is waiting on the finished product, deadlines are important, because they help you stay on task. If you consider most of them arbitrary, it’s probably hard to motivate yourself to accomplish anything.

Showing Up Late

Once upon a time, you habitually arrived at work early. Now, you show up when you want to. It’s possible many of your colleagues share this same attitude, but several wrongs don’t make a right.

Coming into work when you feel like it sends the impression you’re not serious about your job. Your boss may not have addressed the issue, but it’s certain they’ve noticed you’re rarely in the building by your scheduled start time.

Failing to Follow Through on Assignments

Everyone has a memory lapse sometimes, but regularly breaking commitments will earn you a reputation as someone who can’t be trusted. When you say you’re going to do something, keep your word and if you’re unable to do so, let the person who’s counting on you know as soon as possible that you won’t be able to deliver. If you have a problem with overcommitting, make a habit of checking your schedule and really thinking about the task at hand before accepting it.
